When Valerie von Bechtolsheim and Andrew Bentham decided to renovate and extend their family home in leafy South London, they had a clear vision: “The house should be a retreat, far removed from the feeling of a big city.”

Together with her architect brother Felix von Bechtolsheim, Valerie designed an extension that would become the new heart of family life.

Like many Victorian terraced houses, the property had a long, narrow garden. This is where the extension was built—creating a modern contrast to the traditional Victorian rooms facing the street.

From the outside, the extension appears simple, clad in clay tiles. Inside, however, it is bright, spacious, and filled with light.

The floor was lowered by five steps to achieve a ceiling height of nearly four meters, creating an open living area.
